Tesla has always been a pioneer in the tech industry, constantly pushing the envelope of what’s achievable. One of their most captivating projects has been the creation of humanoid robots. This article explores the evolution of Tesla’s humanoid robots, from their initial inception to the most recent model, the Optimus Gen 2. 

Tesla’s journey into humanoid robotics began in 2021 with the introduction of their first concept, Optimus. At this point, Optimus was simply a human dressed in a robot costume. Despite its modest start, this marked the beginning of Tesla’s ambitious foray into humanoid robotics. 

In 2022, Elon Musk, Tesla’s founder and CEO, revealed two tangible humanoid robot prototypes. The first was Bumble C, which made its debut at Tesla AI Day 2022 by walking across the stage. Despite its careful stride, this was the first instance of Bumble C walking without assistance. 

However, the highlight of the event was Optimus, which was presented for the first time, resembling a contemporary interpretation of a medieval knight. Although it was not capable of walking and had to be rolled onto the stage, it managed to wave to the audience and execute a brief dance move while supported on a stand.  

Musk stated that the prototype design was “quite similar” to what would eventually be produced. He also expressed that it would someday assist millions of people and perform numerous beneficial tasks. This represented a significant advancement in the development of Tesla’s humanoid robots. 

The creation of a fully operational humanoid robot is a complex endeavour that necessitates progress in various areas, from artificial intelligence to materials science. Despite the obstacles, Tesla has demonstrated remarkable progress in a relatively short timeframe. 

The Dawn of a New Era: Tesla’s Optimus Gen 2 Humanoid Robot 

In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, Tesla has once again made a groundbreaking announcement with the introduction of its latest humanoid robot, the Optimus Gen 2. This new prototype signifies a monumental leap in the field of robotics, demonstrating the advancements that have been made since the first public demonstration of the Optimus robot. 

The Optimus Gen 2 was unveiled to the world through a demo video released by Tesla. The video, which Tesla assures is real and not computer-generated, shows the robot performing various tasks. These tasks range from walking and crouching to manipulating delicate objects like eggs without breaking them. The video serves as a testament to the remarkable progress that has been made in the field of robotics. 

One of the key features of the Optimus Gen 2 is its Tesla-designed actuators and sensors. These components play a crucial role in the robot’s movements and interactions with its environment. The robot also boasts a 30 per cent increase in walk speed and a 10 kg reduction in total weight. These improvements contribute to the robot’s enhanced balance and full-body control. 

The Optimus Gen 2 also features a 2-DoF (degrees of freedom) actuated neck and articulated toe sections, which mimic human foot geometry. These features, coupled with the robot’s human-like shape and size, enable it to replace human labour in various tasks seamlessly. 

Perhaps one of the most impressive features of the Optimus Gen 2 is its hands. The robot’s hands are equipped with tactile sensing on all fingers, allowing it to handle delicate objects with precision. This feature is particularly noteworthy as it represents one of the most challenging aspects of humanoid robot design. 

The robot has undergone a significant transformation with a reduction in its overall weight by 10 kg, leading to an enhancement in its balance and comprehensive control over its entire structure. Additionally, it has achieved a remarkable increase in its walking speed by 30%, enabling it to move at a faster pace. 

Optimus Gen 2 is still a prototype and its production or sale has not begun yet. It serves as a potential waypoint on Tesla’s journey towards creating a functional humanoid robot that can perform tasks humans don’t want to do.
